Fabulous 50: Olympic Gold

Fifty years ago at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, NC State's Steve Rerych won gold medals in the 4 x 100 freestyle and 4 x 200 freestyle swimming competitions.  Rerych graduated from NC State in 1969 with a BS in zoology.  While a student, he was a three-time All-American and nine-time ACC champion.

Rerych earned a medical degree from Columbia University and did an intership at Duke University.  He has practiced as a surgeon in North Carolina and West Virginia.

He has been inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame and the NC State Athletics Hall of Fame.  There is a youtube video of his accomplishments made for the NC State Hall of Fame induction.  For more photos and information about Rerych during his time at NC State (he also played on the baseball team), see the Special Collections website.
